As wall thicknesses and manufacturing methods evolved, the actual dimensions shifted, but the naming convention stayed. So a 2-inch NPS pipe has an outer diameter of 2.375 inches, not 2 inches.

From 14 inches NPS and above, the nominal size does match the outer diameter exactly. This makes larger pipe sizes somewhat more intuitive to work with.
