Tube size refers to the actual outside diameter and wall thickness of a tube, and getting these figures right matters enormously in maritime, offshore, construction, and industrial applications. The wrong size means delays, rework, or worse. What is tube size and why does it matter?

Tube size describes the physical dimensions of a tube, primarily its outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness. Unlike pipe, which uses a nominal bore system, tube sizing is based on actual measured dimensions. This makes it more straightforward in some ways, but it also means precision is non-negotiable.

Why does it matter? Because steel tubes are structural and functional components. They carry loads, fluids, or gases in environments where failure is not an option. In maritime and offshore settings especially, a tube that is even slightly undersized for its application can compromise the integrity of an entire system. What’s the difference between pipe size and tube size?

This is one of the most common points of confusion among buyers, and it is worth clearing up immediately.

Pipe size is based on a nominal bore system. The stated diameter does not correspond to any actual physical measurement of the pipe. It is a reference number tied to a standardised range of wall thicknesses, known as schedules. For example, a schedule 40 or schedule 80 pipe designation tells you the wall thickness relative to the nominal bore.

Tube size, on the other hand, is based on actual outside diameter and wall thickness. When you order a tube with a 50mm outside diameter and a 3mm wall thickness, those are the real dimensions you will receive.

In short: pipe sizing is nominal and system-based, tube sizing is actual and dimensional. Mixing the two up when placing an order is a very common and very avoidable mistake. If you are unsure which system applies to your application, it is always worth checking with your supplier before ordering.

How do you measure tube size accurately?

Measuring a tube correctly requires the right tools and a clear understanding of what you are measuring.

  1. Measure the outside diameter (OD): Use a vernier caliper or digital caliper placed across the widest point of the tube’s outer edge. This gives you the OD, which is the primary dimension used to identify a tube.
  2. Measure the wall thickness: Use an ultrasonic thickness gauge for installed tubes, or a caliper on the cut end of a tube. Wall thickness, combined with the OD, determines the inside diameter and the tube’s pressure and load capacity.
  3. Calculate the inside diameter (ID): Subtract twice the wall thickness from the outside diameter. For example, a tube with a 60mm OD and a 4mm wall has an ID of 52mm.
  4. Check the length: Standard lengths vary by material and standard, but custom cutting is available for project-specific requirements.

Always measure at multiple points along the tube, as slight ovality can affect readings. For critical applications, document your measurements and compare them against the relevant material certificate.

What are the standard tube sizes and dimensions?

Steel tubes come in a wide range of standard sizes, and the exact range depends on the material grade and the applicable standard. Common outside diameters in metric sizing run from around 6mm up to 508mm and beyond. In imperial sizing, tubes are measured in fractions of an inch, with common sizes ranging from 1/4 inch up to 20 inches for larger structural and industrial applications.

Wall thickness is typically defined in millimetres or inches, and the combination of OD and wall thickness determines the tube’s weight per metre, its pressure rating, and its suitability for a given application.

Key standards that govern tube dimensions include:

  • ASTM A519 for mechanical tubing in carbon and alloy steel
  • EN 10210 and EN 10219 for structural hollow sections
  • ASTM A554 for welded stainless steel mechanical tubing
  • DIN 2391 for precision steel tubes

How do you identify tube size from markings or certifications?

Most steel tubes carry markings that tell you exactly what you have. These markings are typically stamped, stencilled, or printed along the length of the tube and include the following information:

The outside diameter and wall thickness are usually stated directly. You will also typically see the material grade (for example, S355, 316L stainless, or an ASTM designation), the applicable standard, the heat or cast number for traceability, and the manufacturer’s identification.

If the markings are worn or unclear, the material certificate is your next resource. A proper mill certificate, also called a 3.1 or 3.2 certificate under EN 10204, will list all dimensions, the material composition, mechanical properties, and the relevant standard. For procurement in maritime and offshore sectors, material certificates are not optional. They are a core part of compliance and documentation.

If you receive a tube without legible markings and no certificate, do not assume the dimensions. Measure it yourself using the method described above and request documentation from your supplier before using it in a critical application.
